Painting
Paintings are a common type of art used in America and various countries around the world. Artist use a variety of materials including different types of paints such as watercolor, acrylic, and oil.
Artists commonly choose to paint on a canvas, a strong piece of cloth, or paper although you may choose to paint on something as simple as a rock. They may paint using big or small paintbrushes.
Paintings are usually done on flat surfaces and feel soft to touch. Rough surfaces are not often used for paintings because they may ruin clean and precise lines and details.

- A landscape is a painting of the outdoors such as lakes, parks, or mountains.
- A portrait is a picture of a person, and a self-portrait is a painting that an artist draws of himself or herself.
- A still life is a painting of objects such as a bowl of fruit or a piano.
- Instead of a still life painters may create a real life scene such as a birthday party or sports game.

One famous painter to remember is the European Vincent Van Gogh. He lived from 1853 to 1890. He was famous for his use of bright colors and large brush strokes in his artwork. This is a self-portrait he painted titled “Self-Portrait Without Beard.”
